Start translating

We automatically translate everything on the site, but we need human reviewers to make sure translations are clear, simple, and accurate. Translated pages show a warning until they have been fully reviewed and edited by a human.

This short walkthrough shows how to edit and approve translations on Crowdin. (6 minutes)

We use Crowdin to coordinate that review process. Anyone can contribute.

  1. Read the code of conduct so you know what we expect when you collaborate on translations.

  2. Create a free Crowdin account. You can use an anonymous email address and username if you prefer (e.g. Tuta). If you want help deciding whether that matters for you, read Protecting your privacy.

  3. Join our Crowdin project. You can review suggestions, edit strings, and vote on or approve translations.

  4. Tell us your username: Fill out the contact form here so we can promote you to a “proofreader.”

    • Include your Crowdin username so we can promote you to a “proofreader.”
    • Include your Signal username so we can be in touch moving forward.
  1. Read the translation style guide to understand how to translate the content in a way that matches our voice and tone.

  2. Find a file to work on. Go to our Crowdin project > Select a language > Look for any files that don’t say 100% > To the right of the file, click on the three dots button > Proofread.

  3. Edit or approve strings: Find strings that do not have a green checkmark ✅ next to them. Approve items that look good. Edit items that need imrpovement.
